Story of the farm:
Peru is a leader in Organic Coffee and Fair Trade Certified Coffees and increasingly is producing interesting and unique micro-lots. Most Peruvian coffee farms are small (the average coffee farm size is three hectares) and are managed by family members. Organic Peru La Florida coffee comes from three different varieties which are Bourbon, Typica and Caturra. The beans of Organic Peru La Florida are of average size with average chaff content and Strictly Hard Beans (SHB) --- also referred to as SHG, Strictly High Grown, Specialty coffee grown at an altitude above approx 4000 ft, which produces coffee beans that mature slower and have a higher density.
The coffee that La Florida produces are of the Arabica variety, grown under agroforestry systems, in harmony with the environment and with social responsibility. It is grown organically without the use of chemicals by a cooperative of small-holding growers in the Chanchamayo region of south-central Peru. This group of 50 small-scale coffee farmers came together in 1966 to form the Cooperativa Agraria Cafetalera La Florida (CAC La Florida) in order to bypass local intermediaries.
Their education programs provide training for members, workshops on coffee production and management sessions for community youth. This includes access to new libraries, school gardens, and uniforms. CAC La Florida believes their children are the future of the cooperative and must, therefore, provide support in educating strong leaders capable of management roles including the following:
- Credit RestorationLeadership Education
- Environmental Education
- Environmental Restoration
- Empowerment of Women
- Access to access to doctors, medicine and proper nutrition
- Financial assistance in case of serious ailments or accidents
