We've all heard the environmental case against plastic. But there's a quieter, more personal story unfolding — one that's happening inside your body, right now, whether you think about it or not.
Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, placentas, and breast milk. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals from plastic packaging are linked to hormonal imbalance, fertility issues, and thyroid disruption. And "forever chemicals" — PFAS — are accumulating in our tissues in ways scientists are only beginning to understand.
This isn't alarmism. It's biology. And it's worth paying attention to.
What Plastic Is Actually Doing to Your Body
Microplastics: Everywhere You Don't Want Them
Microplastics are tiny plastic fragments — some invisible to the naked eye — that shed from plastic products, packaging, and synthetic fibers. They've now been detected in human blood, lung tissue, placentas, and breast milk. Once inside the body, they can trigger inflammatory responses and may act as carriers for other toxic chemicals.
BPA, Phthalates & Endocrine Disruption
BPA (bisphenol A) and phthalates are chemicals used to make plastics flexible and durable. The problem: they mimic estrogen in the body. Chronic low-level exposure has been linked to hormonal imbalance, reduced fertility, thyroid disruption, and developmental concerns in children. "BPA-free" products often substitute similar compounds (BPS, BPF) that carry comparable risks.
PFAS: The "Forever Chemicals"
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are found in non-stick cookware coatings, food packaging, water-resistant fabrics, and more. They don't break down — in the environment or in your body. Accumulation has been linked to immune suppression, hormonal disruption, and increased cancer risk.
The Exposures You're Probably Not Thinking About
The obvious culprits — plastic water bottles and food containers — get most of the attention. But exposure is far more pervasive:
- Heating plastic — microwaving food in plastic containers or plastic-wrapped dishes dramatically increases chemical leaching
- Plastic-lined coffee cups — most disposable cups have a thin plastic interior lining
- Conventional tea bags — many are sealed with plastic mesh or heat-bonded with polypropylene; they literally steep plastic into your cup
- Plastic cutting boards — micro-shavings end up in your food with every cut
- Thermal receipts — coated with BPA; absorbed through skin contact
- Synthetic clothing — releases microplastic fibers with every wash
Understanding the Triangle: Not All Plastics Are Equal
You've seen the triangle symbol on the bottom of plastic containers — but it's not a recycling symbol. It's a resin identification code, and the number inside tells you a lot about what you're dealing with.
- #1 (PET) and #2 (HDPE) — most common for body care and food packaging; considered lower-risk, especially when not heated
- #4 (LDPE) and #5 (PP) — generally considered safer options
- #3 (PVC) — contains phthalates; avoid where possible
- #6 (PS / Polystyrene) — can leach styrene, especially with heat or fatty foods
- #7 (Other/PC) — catch-all category that may include BPA-containing polycarbonate
The rule of thumb: avoid #3, #6, and #7. Never heat any plastic. And when in doubt, choose glass.
A Note on Our Own Products — Because Transparency Matters
We'd be remiss not to address the elephant in the room: many wellness brands — and yes, some of the third-party products we carry — come in plastic containers. We're not perfect, and we won't pretend otherwise.
But here's what we can tell you about the Mockingbird line: we made a deliberate choice early on to use glass for almost every product we formulate ourselves. Our body butters, facial serums, essential oils, tinctures, perfume oils, and massage oils are all housed in glass. It wasn't the easiest or cheapest path — but it was the right one.
The two exceptions in our own line are our shampoo and conditioner, which currently come in plastic. It's something we're actively working to change, with stainless steel options on our radar. We believe in being honest about where we are on that journey.

Easy Swaps to Start Today
You don't have to overhaul your life overnight. Start here:
- 🧻 Ditch paper towels and napkins — Switch to washable cloth kitchen towels and fabric napkins. Toss them in the laundry with your regular load. Done.
- 🫙 Replace plastic food storage — Glass containers for leftovers, mason jars for bulk goods, beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap
- 🚰 Upgrade your water bottle — Glass or stainless steel; stop refilling single-use plastic bottles
- ☕ Bring your own mug — Disposable coffee cups are lined with plastic; a reusable mug is one of the easiest swaps you can make
- 🍵 Switch to loose-leaf tea — Most conventional tea bags contain plastic. Loose-leaf tea with a stainless steel infuser is a simple, affordable fix
- 🪥 Swap your bathroom plastics — Start with a bamboo toothbrush, then your body brush, bath mitt, and shower brush
- 🧴 Choose glass-packaged body care — Read labels, check resin codes on plastic containers, and prioritize brands that default to glass
- 🌿 Support your body's detox pathways — Herbs like chlorella and cilantro have been used traditionally to support the body's natural ability to bind and eliminate heavy metals. A quality herbal tincture can be a meaningful part of a broader detox-supportive lifestyle
At Mockingbird Apothecary & General Store, we believe that what you put on your body matters as much as what you put in it. Every product we carry is chosen with intention — and every product we make is formulated with your long-term wellbeing in mind.
